What does SEO consist of?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) consists of improving a website’s visibility in search engines through a combination of strategies. It is a constantly evolving practice, ever changing to fit current consumer behaviour and modern technological advances.

On-page SEO is the practice of optimising each individual web page to improve its search engine rankings and attract relevant traffic.

It includes:-

  • Keyword placement
  • Meta tags
  • URL structure
  • Internal linking
  • Image alt text
  • High-quality content

All this is aimed at making the page more search-engine and user-friendly.

Off-page SEO, such as link building, focuses on actions taken outside your website to boost its search engine rankings. When google originally started, the best way to build trust to ones site was to obtain a link from a respectable source, the higher the respected website the better. The art of Off-Page SEO I to acquire these links back to your site to demonstrate trust and authority in your industry.

Techniques include:-

  • Outreach
  • Content promotion
  • Guest posting
  • Digital PR

Technical SEO refers to the process of optimising your website’s infrastructure to help search engines crawl, index, and rank it more effectively. It ensures that your site meets technical requirements such as :-

  • Speed
  • Security
  • Mobile-friendliness
  • Structured data

Key elements of Technical SEO include:

  • Site Speed & Performance: Optimising loading times for a better user experience and higher rankings.

  • Mobile-Friendliness: Ensuring your website is fully responsive and performs well on all devices.

  • Crawlability & Indexing: Using clean site architecture, proper internal linking, and robots.txt to help search engines crawl your site effectively.

  • Secure Protocol (HTTPS): Implementing SSL certificates to provide a secure browsing experience.

  • XML Sitemaps: Creating and submitting sitemaps to help search engines understand your site’s structure.

  • Canonical Tags: Preventing duplicate content issues by specifying preferred page versions.

  • Structured Data (Schema Markup): Adding code to help search engines better understand your content and enhance search results with rich snippets.

  • Fixing Broken Links & Errors: Regularly auditing and repairing 404 errors, redirect loops, and broken links.

  • Core Web Vitals: Meeting Google’s page experience signals, including load speed, interactivity, and visual stability.

Strong technical SEO improves site health, enhances user experience, and supports better visibility in search engines.

Ever heard the saying Content is King in SEO? Well this is ultimately true, if you don't particularly specify what your page is about you cannot rank.

It is true you can rank a page with poor link building and poor tech, but you cannot rank a page for a keyword you want with the wrong content.

Content SEO focuses on creating and optimizing high-quality, relevant, and engaging content that attracts users and improves visibility in search engine results. It's about aligning your content with search intent, using targeted keywords naturally, and ensuring it's valuable to both users and search engines.

Key components of Content SEO include:

  • Keyword Research & Targeting: Identifying the right keywords based on user intent and search volume.

  • High-Quality, Valuable Content: Producing well-researched, informative, and original content that addresses user needs.

  • Optimised Headings and Structure: Using clear H1, H2, and H3 tags to organize content for readability and SEO.

  • Meta Titles & Descriptions: Writing compelling and keyword-rich meta tags to improve click-through rates.

  • Internal Linking: Connecting related pages on your site to enhance navigation and distribute authority.

  • Content Freshness: Regularly updating and expanding content to keep it relevant and competitive.

  • Multimedia Use: Incorporating images, videos, and infographics to enrich user experience and increase engagement.

  • Readability & Formatting: Ensuring content is easy to read with short paragraphs, bullet points, and clear language.

  • E-A-T Principles: Demonstrating Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness in your content.

Content SEO is essential for attracting organic traffic, improving engagement, and supporting overall SEO strategy through valuable, search-friendly material.

User Experience (UX) and SEO go hand in hand — search engines increasingly prioritise websites that offer users a smooth, intuitive, and engaging experience. A strong UX not only keeps visitors on your site longer but also increases the chances of conversion and reduces bounce rates, all of which positively impact SEO performance.

Key elements of UX that influence SEO:

  • Mobile Responsiveness: Ensuring your website works seamlessly across all devices and screen sizes.
  • Page Speed: Optimising load times to prevent user drop-off and improve engagement.
  • Clear Navigation: Structuring menus and links logically so users can easily find what they need.
  • Readable Content Layout: Using clean fonts, consistent spacing, and intuitive formatting for easy reading.
  • Interactive & Accessible Design: Designing for all users, including those with disabilities, to improve inclusivity and usability.
  • Low Bounce Rates: Keeping visitors engaged through valuable content, clear CTAs, and intuitive page flow.
  • Visual Hierarchy: Strategically using colours, size, and placement to guide users to important content or actions.
  • Minimal Pop-Ups or Distractions: Reducing intrusive elements that disrupt the browsing experience.
  • Secure Browsing (HTTPS): Ensuring users feel safe with secure and encrypted connections.
  • User-Friendly URLs: Keeping URLs short, clean, and descriptive to improve both user trust and search engine indexing.

In short, a good user experience makes your website more enjoyable and effective — which search engines reward with better rankings and increased visibility.

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) focuses on improving the percentage of website visitors who take a desired action — such as making a purchase, filling out a form, or signing up for a newsletter. It’s about turning traffic into tangible results.

Key elements of CRO:

  • Clear Calls-to-Action (CTAs)

  • Simplified forms and checkout processes

  • A/B testing to compare versions of content or design

  • Trust signals (reviews, badges, guarantees)

  • Compelling, benefit-driven copy

  • Strategic use of visuals and video

  • Personalised user experiences

  • Mobile-optimised design

  • Fast page load speeds

  • Analysing user behaviour (heatmaps, session recordings)

By refining these areas, CRO helps maximise the value of your existing traffic — improving ROI without needing to increase ad spend.

Local SEO focuses on optimising your online presence to attract more business from relevant local searches on Google and other search engines. It's essential for businesses that serve specific geographic areas.

Key elements of Local SEO:

  • Google Business Profile (GBP) optimisation
Keep your profile up to date with accurate info, photos, and regular posts.

  • Local citations
Ensure consistent Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP) across directories (Yell, Yelp, Thomson, etc.).

  • Localised website content
Create pages targeting your city/town or service areas with relevant keywords.

  • Customer reviews
Encourage and respond to Google and third-party reviews to build trust and visibility.

  • Local backlinks
Gain links from nearby businesses, local news sites, chambers of commerce, etc.

  • Mobile optimisation
Make sure your site works perfectly on mobile devices — local searches are often mobile.

  • Use of location-based keywords
Optimise metadata and on-page content with specific geographic terms (e.g. “plumber in Manchester”).

  • Schema markup for local business
Help search engines understand your business with structured data.

Local SEO helps you appear in the "local pack" and map results — ideal for driving foot traffic, calls, and leads from people searching near you.

Mobile SEO ensures your website delivers an optimal experience for users on smartphones and tablets, which is essential since the majority of searches now happen on mobile devices.

Key elements of Mobile SEO:

  • Responsive design
Your site should automatically adjust to fit all screen sizes and orientations.

  • Fast page load speed
Mobile users expect quick loading times — compress images, use lazy loading, and minimise code.

  • Mobile-friendly navigation
Menus and buttons should be easy to tap, and content should be easy to scroll without zooming.

  • Avoid intrusive pop-ups
Google penalises sites that block content with large pop-ups or interstitials on mobile.

  • Optimised mobile UX
Clear fonts, readable content, and intuitive design enhance usability and reduce bounce rate.

  • Mobile-first indexing
Google primarily indexes the mobile version of your website, so it must have the same content and metadata as desktop.

  • Use of AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages)
Helps deliver lightning-fast content, especially useful for blogs or news.

  • Touch-friendly elements
Ensure buttons and links are spaced well enough to avoid accidental clicks.

  • Local and voice search optimisation
Mobile users often search on the go, so include conversational keywords and location-specific content.

Mobile SEO isn’t just about shrinking your site to fit a screen — it’s about creating a seamless, fast, and user-focused mobile experience that supports rankings and conversions.

E-commerce SEO is the process of optimising an online store to improve its visibility in search engine results, drive organic traffic, and increase sales without relying solely on paid advertising.

Key elements of E-commerce SEO:

  • Keyword-optimised product pages
Use relevant, high-converting keywords in titles, descriptions, and meta tags for each product.

  • Unique product descriptions
Avoid duplicate content from manufacturers — write original, informative copy that helps users and ranks well.

  • Optimised category pages
Include keyword-rich headings, descriptions, and internal links to products.

  • Technical SEO
Ensure fast load times, mobile-friendliness, and proper indexation of all pages, especially faceted navigation.

  • Clean, SEO-friendly URL structures
Use readable URLs with target keywords.

  • Schema markup
Implement structured data to show ratings, reviews, prices, and availability directly in search results.

  • Internal linking
Use smart internal linking from blogs or related products to distribute authority and guide users.

  • Image optimisation
Use descriptive file names, alt text, and compressed images to improve load speed and visibility in image search.

  • User-generated content
Encourage reviews and Q&As on product pages to build trust and improve keyword relevance.

  • Content marketing
Create helpful blog posts, buying guides, or videos to target broader search queries and support your product pages.

  • Secure and user-friendly site
A trustworthy, easy-to-navigate site with HTTPS boosts SEO and conversions.

SEO FAQs

This can depend on your personal goals, your budget, the market you are in and your current state of affairs.

Upon initial conversations we will do a fact find so that we can work out what the best strategies may work for you based on the above mentions. If you are looking for a quick fix to bring in business then SEO is not the right strategy for you, however if you are looking for a more sustainable, longer term, higher quality of marketing then yes SEO could work for you. Get in touch to learn more.

Again this may depend on a few factors, your competition, your budget, your cooperation, how good your website is to start off with, to name a few variables. Generally speaking SEO is a medium to long term marketing strategy, although reaping better value for money it takes longer than other strategies can do. If you require a fast turnaround strategy then it would be useful for us to have an initial chat, so that we can work out what's best for your ambitions and needs. For example a local SEO campaign could be pretty quick, but a national campaign would be more of a long term thing.

Yes absolutely, in fact if budget fits, we would recommend it. having more thane marketing strategy diversifies risk and you have multiple channels in which to generate leads.

With larger SEO packages we ask for a commitment of 12 months. This is because the first 6 months you are not expecting any return on investment, the next 6 months you will start to see traction and a few enquiries come in, by then you will know if you want to work with us. In year 2 you will most likely get the enquiries you need to make your SEO campaign worthwhile and get that all important return. From there you can expect big returns in years 3 and 4.

If you were really good at SEO would you settle for a job in house at less money and pay when you can either work for an agency or work for yourself? We are not so sure. The trouble of employing people and paying insurance and tax and having potential fall out risks seems daunting in this day and age as employees gain more and more power. If in house suits you then I would highly recommend to go with what  you are comfortable with, however in a competitive world, anyone worth their salt, are unlikely to want to work in house.

As we've mentioned, the typical agency model is not around providing a long term SEO service for customers. An SEO agency requires more sales than what customers are dropping off, that's their model. Our model is the opposite way around where we provide my best advice and SEO from the offset, and we back our ability, in the hope that you stay on with us as your business starts to see the return from SEO. Also with agencies you get a high turnover in staff, you may not have the same person working with you regularly. As a small outfit, we are able to commit to all projects fully, therefore familiarising myself with your vision and committing to your cause.
